About me

My name is Chelsie de Bomford. I am the founder of Nest Early Childhood Burnie, Tasmania. I am passionate about the early years, in particular nature pedagogy, designing inspiring learning environments and documenting children’s learning. I am strongly influenced by the Italian Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education where children are viewed as unique, capable and competent individuals.

I have 21 years’ experience in the early years including working as a long day care educator, centre director of both community and private centres, past owner/operator of a local long day care and outside school hours care service, an Early Childhood Consultant and I am in my 17th year teaching the Early Childhood Education & Care qualifications in Vocational Education & Training.

Welcome to my 'Nest'

Why did I choose the name nest? Because it fits nicely with my natural philosophy on parenting, teaching and learning, a nest being ‘A shelter made or used by a bird to hold its eggs during incubation, a snug retreat to house its young until they are developmentally ready to fledge’. One of my favorite quotes is by the Dalai Lama.

"Give the ones you love the wings to fly, roots to come back and reasons to stay "

Dalai Lama The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso

My office

My office varies from day to day. I am a busy working mother of two. My week is like many other families, it consists of school runs, swimming classes, music, and I teach two days a week. Additional to this is my professional consultancy/workshops and the Nest App.

My husband is a shift worker and we are both very hands-on with our children. Quality time is essential for balancing family life.

"Family like branches on a tree, we all grow in different directions, yet our roots remain as one"

My inspiration

I have always felt that working alongside young children is a delight and a privilege! Being fortunate enough to have our own children further inspired me to continue to teach and advocate the amazing potential of all children.

I am also hugely influenced by nature and believe that children learn best when engaged in the natural world, this is why you may see many images and examples of children in the outdoors and I hope to motivate you to go outside too.

"If we want children to flourish, to become truly empowered, then let us allow them to love the earth before we ask them to save it"

David SobelPhilosopher of place-based education

My philosophy

I believe every child deserves the right to be cared for, nurtured, respected and valued regardless of their ability, age, culture, race or religion. Every child is unique, precious, capable and worthy of love.

I admire the Reggio pedagogy of ‘listening’ and working alongside children as a researcher, constructing knowledge together. I also believe educators have a professional responsibility to offer many rich diverse learning experiences where children are encouraged to play with materials discover and communicate what they know, understand, wonder about, question, feel and imagine. It is through this journey together that we can truly reflect on and document their thoughts and ideas to make their thinking visible through their ‘natural Languages’.

"Every child is born a naturalist. His eyes are, by nature, open to the glories of the stars, the beauty of the flowers, and the mystery of life"

My mission

To encourage, motivate and inspire educators and parents to make a positive difference in the lives of young children. To raise awareness of the importance of the early years and take responsibility for the huge influence we as adults have on young children.

To promote educators, parents and community organisations to;

  • Advocate for the rights of all children
  • Feel a sense of belonging and connectedness to our community
  • Provide children with plenty of opportunities for uninterrupted time to play
  • Go back to basics and reconnect children with nature
  • See the strengths and potential in each child and value their uniqueness
  • Provide open-ended resources and experiences that foster children’s creativity and imagination
  • Take time to thoughtfully and intentionally plan and implement beautiful learning environments where children are encouraged to explore, create and investigate many new possibilities

Why I designed the Nest App for the Early Years

During my time as a director, educator and mentor, I came to realize that many educators are feeling ‘bogged down’ in the paper trail of documentation. This is the reason I decided to design the an electronic child portfolio for the early years. The Nest App enables educators to be more time efficient, it is simple to use, professional, engages families and showcases the strengths and potential of each child, in essence raising families awareness of the importance of the early years and the learning that takes place when their children are engaged in rich and meaningful experiences.

"I am very proud and excited to introduce Nest Early Childhood App to you! I do believe this will transform your current documentation and planning methods"
